Accra rewards having your own car and punishes having the wrong one. The city sprawls from Kasoa in the west to Tema in the east, trotros and ride-hailing thin out after dark, and the trip that looks like fifteen minutes on a map is an hour at five in the afternoon.

Driving in Accra
Traffic has a shape
Inbound on the Motorway and Spintex in the morning, outbound from about four. The Ring Road and Liberation Road carry most of what crosses the middle of the city. Leaving twenty minutes earlier is worth more than any route.
The roads vary street by street
The main arteries are good. A hundred metres off them you can be on unsealed road with real potholes, which is most of why saloons and SUVs rent at different prices here.
Fuel is everywhere
Stations are frequent, attended, and take mobile money. You will not need to plan around fuel inside the city.
Parking
Malls, hotels and offices have their own. On-street in Osu and Ridge is informal and usually attended — expect to pay a small amount in cash.

Around the city
Meetings across Airport City, Ridge and Cantonments, where parking exists and a trotro does not help.
The coast road
Cape Coast and Elmina are two to three hours west on a good road. A comfortable weekend, and the most common long trip we rent for.
Kumasi and the north
Four to five hours to Kumasi. Worth an SUV and worth a driver.
Renting in Accra — questions
Do I need an international driving permit?
A valid national licence is usually accepted for short visits, and an international permit alongside it removes all doubt at a checkpoint. Tell us which you hold when you book and we will confirm before you travel.
Can you deliver the car to my hotel?
Yes, anywhere in Accra and Tema. Give us the address in the chat.
Which side of the road?
The right, as in most of West Africa. Steering wheels are on the left.
Is a 4x4 worth it?
Inside Accra, rarely — a saloon is cheaper and parks more easily. For the north, or for unsealed roads in the rains, yes.
